Place
A location with a meaning, meaning can change over time and can be different from different perspectives.
What is the difference between location and locale?
Location- where a place is on the map.
Locale- effect that people have on changing a place.
Insider perspective
People who have a stronger relationship with the place they are familiar with.
Outsider perspective
Someone who cannot identify themselves with a specific place.
Shared space
When the physical divide between the footways and the roads are removed altogether.
Social Exclusion
Exclusion from the prevailing social system and its rights and privileges. Resulting in poverty and belonging to a social minority group.
Time-space compression
How technology speeds up connections between places over vast distances.
Exogenous Factors
External influences on a place’s identity, these are caused by a place’s relationship with other places.
Endogenous Factors
The local, internal characteristics which create a places identity.
Clone Town
Settlements where the high street is dominated by chain stores.
Globalisation
The world is becoming increasingly interconnected as a result of massively increased trade and cultural exchange.
Homogenised
Different landscapes in a country resemble those in a different region.
Global shift
An investment in proportion of global manufacturing carried out in newly industrialising countries.
Urban Deprivation
A standard of living below the majority in a particular society.
Rebranding
To discard negative perceptions of a place.
