Definitions Flashcards
Definition:
Vector
A vector has magnitude (size) and direction, and is often shown as a arrow.
(Magnitude means length in this case)
Command Word:
Describe
Write a sentence that gives the features of the situation.
Definition:
Translation
A translation moves a shape up, down or from side to side but it does not change its appearance in any other way
Command Word:
Simplify
Make the information smaller or collect like things together
Definition:
Surds
Surds are square roots of non square numbers, i.e. square roots that don’t give whole number answers
Definition:
Vector Notation
Vector notation is how we write vectors in mathematics.
A vector is a quantity which has both magnitude and direction. It can be used to show a movement.
We can write vectors in several ways:
- Using an arrow,
- Using boldface
- Underlined.
Definition:
Magnitude
How long a vector is, the length of the vector
Process:
Resultant Vector
The resultant vector is what you get when you combine vectors together, you can do this by adding, subtracting or scaling.
(You can do this by drawing out vectors, column notation or vector notation.)
Definition:
Scalar
What you are multiplying the vector by too change the magnitude, not the direction (unless negative)
Definition:
Parallel Lines
Straight lines that will never cross, in vectors these lines have the same direction (but don’t need to have the same magnitude)
Definition:
Column Vectors
Definition:
Collinear
If points are collinear they lie on the same straight line.
Definition:
Midpoint
A point that is halfway along a long. It cuts the line into two equal sections.
Command Word:
Express
Re-write in another form, some working may be needed.
