Definitions Flashcards
How many particles are there in one mole?
6.02 x 10 to the power of 23
Empirical formula
gives the smallest whole number ratio of atoms of each element in a compound.
Molecular formula
the actual numbers of atoms of each type of element in a molecule.
Nitrate formula
NO3-
Hydroxide
OH-
CArbonate
CO3 2-
Sulfate
SO4 2-
Ammonia
NH4 +
Phosphate
PO4 3-
Displacement reaction
a more reactive element reacts to take the pace of a less reactive one.
Neutralisation reaction
When a base reacts with acids a salt and water are produced.
What is formed in neutralisation with carbonates
CO2
Precipitation reaction
if 2 aqueous compounds react together and one of the products forms a solid its a precipitation reaction.
Molar gas volume
the space one mole of gas occupies at a certain room temp and pressure.
Error
the difference between an experimental value and the correct value.
Precision
How close values are to each other. Any measurement will have uncertainty due to limitations within the sensitivity of the equipment. The uncertainty is half of the scale on the equipment.
Accuracy
How close values are to the correct value.
Atom economy
A measure of the proportion of reactant atoms that become part of the desired product in the balanced chemical equation.
Percentage yield
The actual amount you collect written as a percentage of the theoretical yield.
Theoretical yield
The mass of the product that should be made in a reaction if no chemicals are lost. The actual mass of the product is always less than the theoretical yield.
Avogadros constant
The number of atoms of C12 in exactly 12 grams of C12
