Definitions Flashcards
Pharmacology
branch of medicine concerned with the uses and effects of drugs
Therapeutics
a branch of medicine concerned with prevention of disease and treatment of suffering (eg. vitamin)
Pharmacotherapy
administration of drugs for the purpose of disease prevention or treatment
Pharmacokinetics
movement of a drug through the body
Osmosis
diffusion of H2O down concentration gradient
Drug half-life
provides estimate of the duration of the action of the drug taken
Drug onset
time from point at which drug is administered until it reaches a therapeutic range
Drug duration
time period in which drugs concentration is in a therapeutic range
Drug termination
time period from when drug is administered until its concentration drops out of therapeutic range
Pharmacodynamics
what the drug does to the body to create a response
Potency
amount of drug required to produce a particular intensity of response
Efficacy
maximum intensity of response produced by a particular dose of a drug
Receptor
cellular molecule to which a med binds to produce its effects
Antagonists
prevent action of endogenous substances, usually by competing for receptor binding site
Pharmacogenetics
branch of pharmacology that studies the role of genetic variation in drug responses
