definitions Flashcards
Relative Atomic Mass
(Ar) is the weighted mean mass of an atom of an element compared with one-twelfth of the mass of an atom of carbon-12.
Relative isotopic mass
The mass of an atom of an isotope compared with one-twlfth of the mass of an atom of carbon-12.
Ionic bonding
Strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions (metal and non-metal)
Covalent bonding
A shared pair of electrons between two nuclei between 2 non-metals
Dativecovalent bonding
A bond where there is 1 pair of shared electrons between two atoms between to non-metals
Isotope
I am is of an element with the same number of protons and electrons for a different amount of neutrons
Molar gas volume
One mole of any gas has a volume of 24 litres at 25°C and one atmospheres
Molecular Mass
The relative molecular mass of a substance is the weighted average of the masses of the molecules relative to 1/12 of the mass of a carbon-12 atom.
Molecular formula
The actual number of atoms of each element in a compound
Empiriacal formula
The simplist is whole number ratio of atoms of each element in a compound
