Defining Hearing Loss Flashcards
What are the three types of hearing loss?
- Conductive Hearing Loss
- Sensorineural Hearing Loss
- Mixed Loss of Hearing
Type of hearing loss if: signal transmission through air conduction is impeded and signal transmission through bone conduction is impeded, but less than air conduction
Mixed Hearing Loss
Type of hearing loss if: signal transmission through air conduction is impeded, but bone conduction levels are within the normal range; there is an air-bone gap of at least 10 dB
Conductive Hearing Loss
Type of hearing loss if: signal transmission through air and through bone conduction are impeded and there is not air-bone gap
Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Can bone-conduction thresholds ever be worse than air-conduction thresholds?
NO - physically impossible
Hearing loss in one ear
Unilateral
Hearing loss in both ears
Bilateral
What frequencies are involved in pure-tone average?
500, 1000, and 2000 Hz
How do you find PTA for Degree of Impairment?
Average the thresholds for 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz
What are the ranges for degrees of impairment?
-10 to 15 = None 16 to 25 = Slight 26-40 = Mild 41-55 = Moderate 56-70 = Moderately severe 71-90 = Severe >91 = Profound
What is the degree of impairment for a PTA of 56-70?
Moderately severe
What is the range of PTA if you have a severe hearing loss?
71-90 dB HL
What is the degree of impairment for a PTA of 26-40?
Mild
What is the range of PTA if you have no hearing loss?
-10 to 15 dB HL
What is the degree of impairment for a PTA of 16 to 25?
Slight
