A

Globalization leads to marginalization which leads to a digital divide. This is discussed by Mertens and D’Haenens who argue that the digital underclass face a digital divide

Studied the digital divide in Brussels and found a clear link between class and internet usage
Lower social classes used the internet less (81% were users as opposed to 94% of middle-class people).
They also found a difference in how digital devices were used -
Lower social classes used technology = as entertainment,
The middle classes used devices = boost their knowledge and to research different information. For example, they found that 79% of those from the lower classes owned a games console was opposed to 65% of those from the higher social classes. Mertens and D’Haenens claim that social class was the biggest factor affecting digital inequality as opposed to issues based on gender or ethnicity.

Q
What does globalization lead to? definition?
Does this always occur?
Sociologist?
what has been exaggerated?

A

Globalization is argued to be leading to cultural homogenization (emergence of one global culture) however it could be argued that this does not always occur. Mohammadi argues that the image of western media and its dominance has been exaggerated and that it ignores the interaction which occurs between cultures
Example: Tribes aim to protect their culture by not abandoning their norms, values, and traditions, this is known as cultural defence
