Puritan doctrine
Consistent with calvinism, pessimistic. God’s grace is neccessary for salvation. Main points:
- Deprivation of humanity
- Predestination
- Irresistible Grace
Puritans in America
- Thought of themselves as saviors on God’s mission.
- Wanted to build God’s city on earth
Role of literacy
Important. Was meant to be used as a tool to understand God.
History and Chronicle
Puritans believed that historical events would help them understand God
Southern Literature
Focused on Money
Autobiography
Didactic, ideological. Confessional mode. Most of them included the motive of conversion to God.
Sermons
Means of Grace; ways of God communicating his grace to others. Plain style, creativity, clarity. Explonation -> Application (how does it apply in real life?)
Captivity Narrative
Many Puritans were captured by the natives, and they would describe their experiences through literature. The captured one would await the help from God.
Puritan Poetry
Least important genre; had to be practical and functional.
Great Awakening
Revivalist movement in the 1730s-40s that was meant to bring back the intensivity of the original church. Preachers would move from place to place, organizing meetings and powerful sermons. Awakening stressed the importance of bringing God into one’s heart.
