DNS
Domain Name Servers - translates domain/ host names into IP addresses
VLAN
Virtual Local Area Network- group of computers configured to communicate as if attached to same wire
OSI
Open Systems Interconnection - model used to detail how applications/ computers communicate over a network
DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol - a server that automatically assigns IP addresses to computers from a defined range of numbers configured for a given network
NIC
Network Interface Card - a circuit board or card that is installed in a computer so that it can be connected to a network
LAN
Local Area Network - a computer network that interconnects computers within a limited area
CSU/DSU
Channel Service Unit/ Data Service Unit - a digital interface device used to connect a data terminal equipment
UTP
Unshielded Twisted Pair - twisted pair is the ordinary copper wire that connects home and many business computers to the telephone company
APIPA
Automatic Private IP Addressing - enables a computer to automatically assign itself an IP address when there is no DHCP server available
VPN
Virtual Private Network - a network that is constructed by using public wires to connect to a private network
PPTP
Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol - method for implementing VPNs
IPSec
Internet Protocol Security - a protocol suite for securing IP communications by authenticating and encrypting each IP packet of communication sent
ESP
Encapsulating Security Payload - member of the IPSec protocol suite
L2TP
Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol - protocol used to support VPN
DMZ
Demilitarized Zone - conceptual network design where publicly accessible servers are placed on a separate, isolated between segment
CIDR
Classless Inter-Domain Routing - a way to allocate and specify the Internet addresses used in inter-domain routing
HTTP
Hypertext Transfer Protocol - application protocol for disturbed, collaborative, hypermedia information systems
RIP
Routing Information Protocol - managing router info within a self-contained network
ICMP
Internet Control Message Protocol - used by network devices, like routers, to send error messages indicating that a requested service is not available
ARP
Address Resolution Protocol - mapping an IP address to a physical machine address that is recognized in the local network
FDDI
Fiber Distributed Data Interface - set of ANSI and ISO standards for data transmission on fiber optic lines in a LAN
NIDS
Network Intrusion Detection System - method of security management for computers and networks
CSMA/CD
Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection - media access control method used most notably in a LANing using early Ethernet technology

Security Association - establishment of shared security attributes between two network entities to support secure communication
WPA2
Wi-Fi Protected Access - security protocol and security certification program that secures wireless computer networks
NAT
Network Address Translation - methodology of remapping one IP address space into another by modifying network address info in IP datagram packet headers while they are in transit across a traffic routing device
