Define Tissue Flashcards
A group of similar cells and cell products with a distinct shape and function
Tissue
Cover internal and external surfaces, affect absorption and secretion
Epithelial Tissue
Bind structures together, Cushion, insulate, and allow immune activities
Connective Tissues
Detect stimuli (irritability) , conduct impulses (Excitability) and stores memory
Nervous Tissues
Contract and Relax or shorten and lengthen as well as conduct impulses (Excitability)
Muscle Tissue
One Row of cells
Simple
Multiple Rows of cells
Stratified
One Row of cells that appears to be multiple rows. not all of the cells reach the free surface
Pseudostratified
Means flat, irregular shaped cells with flat nuclei
Squamous
Cells are the same width and height with round nuclei
Cuboidal
Cells are tall and narrow with large oval nuclei
Columnar
Found with columnar cells, are narrow at one end and wide at the other. These secrete Mucus
Goblet Cells
Traits of epithelial tissue
- One surface is attached to a basement membrane and the other is free or unattached
- There is no direct contact with the blood supply
- continues to carry out cell division after maturity
Define muscle fiber
Long and narrow cell in muscle tissues
Are found in some muscle fibers. They are alternating dark and light bands that run perpendicular to the fiber
Striations
Are the structures that anchor cardiac muscle fibers to each other. The cells run end-to-end so they need a strong connection
Intercalated discs
Nervous tissue name the functions
Detect stimuli
Conducts impulses
Stores memory
Extra cellular material produced by the cells of connective tissue. Composed of ground substance and protein fibers.
Matrix
Name the four chemicals found in ground substance of connective tissue
1 water
2 proteoglycans
3 Glycosaminoglycans
4 Glycoproteins
Describe three kinds of protein fibers found in the matrix of connective tissues
1 collagen fibers
2 Reticular (coarse) fibers
3 Elastic Fibers
Name the specific cells found in these connective tissues
Areolar tissue= fibroblasts, Macrophages, Leukocytes
Reticular (Coarse) tissue : Fibroblast
Adipose Tissue= Adipocyte
Fibroblast nuclei, ground substance, collagen
Dense Tissues
Chondrocytes, Matrix, Perichondrium
Cartilages
Compact bone tissue
Osteocytes, bone cells
Blood
Erythrocytes, leukocytes
