define Flashcards
Aseptic
free of microorganisms
admixture
The product that results from adding a drug to a parenteral solution for administration to a patient
aseptic technique
procedures conducted under controlled situations to minimize the chance of contamination. The ability of personnel to manipulate sterile preparations, sterile packaging components, and sterile administration of devices in a way that excludes the introduction of viable microorganisms.
batch preparation
compounding of multiple units of the same item (e.g. of the same strength or volume).
not for immediate use
Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC)
A ventilated cabinet (with stainless steel surfaces) with inward airflow for personnel protection, high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA)-filtered laminar airflow for product protection, and HEPA-filtered exhausted air for environmental protection.
carcinogenic
tending to cause the development of cancer
chemotherapy
The treatment of disease by chemical means. Commonly used to describe drug (chemical) therapy for cancer.
class 100 environment
describes the level of cleanliness for environments that have concentrations of less than 100 particles (0.5 micron and larger) per cubic foot.
compounding
The process of preparing parenteral admixtures
contamination
The presence of microbial or particulate matter where it is not desired, particularly where it’s presence may be harmful.
critical area
an area intended to protect sterile product during manipulation from any secondary microbial contamination. The laminar airflow hood or biological safety cabinet located within the aseptic preparation area.
critical site
The point at which a sterile product or sterile packaging materials may come in contact with contamination (e.g. the point of attachment of a needle to a syringe).
decontamination
destruction, neutralization or removal of a toxic agent.
diluent
for diluting, an agent that dilutes or renders less potent. often used to describe a liquid that is added to a mixture
disinfection
The act of removing infection (i.e. eliminating potentially infectious material from in animate objects).
evacuated bottle
an empty glass bottle in which a vacuum has been created by withdrawing its contents. A negative pressure exists within the bottle which may be used to advantage in filtration procedures or when combining solutions into one container.
exposure
The condition of being subjected to something, such as to infectious agents or chemicals, that may have a harmful effect. Acute exposure is of short duration; chronic exposure is long-term, either continuous or intermittent.
handling
manipulations which may bring the operator into contact with the product (e.g. preparation, compounding, administration, disposal).
hazardous
dangerous, risky, representing a health risk (e.g. chemicals that may be corrosive, flamable, cytotoxic).
HEPA filter
A high-efficiency particulate air filter that has the capability of retaining particles as small as 0.3 µm with a minimum efficiency of 99.9%
in vitro
within a glass; observable in a test tube; in an artificial environment.
incompatibility
not suitable for combination. with respect to admixture preparation, usually refers to phenomena such as precipitation, turbidity, colour change or a non-visible chemical alteration of the product.
laminar airflow hood
A ventilated cabinet (with stainless steel surfaces) which provides a linear pattern of airflow from a high-efficiency filter to create a suitable environment for preparation of sterile parenteral admixtures. The direction of flow pattern of the laminar airflow hood can be horizontal or vertical.
luer-lock
I threaded attachment (fitting) commits connection by twisting one component into another. Such connections are secure (e.g. A syringe may have a luer-lock tip which excepts a needle by a twisting motion).
overwrap
outer covering which protects the package contents
parenteral
injection beneath the skin surface. early means other than intestinal
patency
The condition of being wide open
peritoneum
A strong membrane with a smooth surface, it forms a sack closing the abdominopelvic contents.
polyamp
A term to describe a plastic ampoule
sterile
free of living microorganisms
support area
A room adjacent to the aseptic preparation area activities related to sterile product compounding are performed. activities may include: handwashing, gowning, gloving, gathering of materials, sorting finished products for delivery to patient care areas.
