List the 5 basic elements of the K53 Defensive driving standard
Search, Identify,Predict, Decide, Execute
Search
Keep a constant lookout in all directions, near and far using the mirrors for any possible hazards
Identify
If you see a potential hazard, identify its nature, e.g., stationary/moving vehicle, pedestrian, or animal.
Predict
Determine the nature of the possible danger the hazard might pose e.g. could it move towards your path, possibly requiring you to stop?
Decide
Decide on what actions you will take according to the risks involved e.g. slow down, steer to the side, stop quickly, hoot
Execute
Perform the action/s you have decided on in a calm, controlled and decisive manner
In what conditions should you keep a safe following distance?
you need to increase this distance when
-visibility is poor
-in wet conditions
-when traveling fast
-when carrying a heavy load or several passengers
-when traveling on a loose surface
