Defense Mechanisms Flashcards
Repression
Pushing thoughts or urges out of consciousness down into the unconscious. (Ex; a child who is abused by a parent has no recollection of the events, but was trouble forming relationships.)
Denial
Refusing to accept the reality of something that makes you anxious.
Projection
Believing that impulses coming from within are really coming from other people.
Reaction formation
Replacing an unacceptable feeling or urge with an opposite one.
Displacement
When you can’t take out your anger on the source of your frustration, so you take it out on a less powerful person or thing.
Sublimation
Redirecting a forbidden desire into a socially acceptable desire.
Rationalization
Making up acceptable excuses for behaviors that cause us to feel anxious.
