Rationalization
Using plausible reasons to justify action/reaction/opinion
Repression
Refusing to let unacceptable impulses into conscious awareness – forgetting
Denial
Acting like something bad never happened but knowing it did
Projection
Placing unacceptable feelings one has themselves onto someone else. Two way street: Person A has feelings about something, instead of expressing, accuse Person B of having that feeling
Displacement
Affect is transferred from one person to another. 3 party/situation involved: Person A has feelings about situation/person, doesn’t feel they can express it directly, so takes it out on Person C
Projective Identification
When person who has been projected onto believes the projection
Intellectualization
Content is separated from repressed affect.
Sublimation
Displacing unacceptable impulses/instincts into acceptable and constructive behaviors
Ascetism
Characterized by rigor and self-denial
Introjection/internalization
Internalization of outside events/characteristics of other people
Identification
External objects are absorbed into one’s personality
Reaction Formation
Unacceptable impulses are reflected as their opposite. Trying to hide thought/feeling by doing opposite
Undoing
Avoid being punished for undesirable thoughts or actions. Undo by engaging in contrary behavior. Trying to actually undo a thought/feeling/behavior
