What is an area Defense?
A defensive task that denies enemy forces access to terrain for specific time
What is a mobile defense?
A defensive task to destroy or defeat an enemy through a decisive attack by striking force
What is a retrograde?
A defensive task that involves organized movement away from the enemy
What is a delay?
trading time for space by slowing the enemy and inflicting maximum damage without becoming decisively engaged
What is a withdrawal?
A planned retrograde operation in which a force in contact disengages
What is a retirement?
A form of retrograde in which a force out of contact moves away from the enemy
What is the defense of a linear obstacle?
The defending force seeks to defeat and let me attempt to seize a bridgehead across a linear obstacle
What is a perimeter defense?
Used when subordinate units bypass enemy forces or in the conduct of base defense in the echelon support area
What is a reverse slope defense?
The main defensive position is masked by a topographical crest. Used at Battalion or below
What is a battle position?
A defensive location oriented on a likely enemy avenue of approach
What are the five purposes of the defense?
