17
Q

Heavy Blitz

A

Force iso to middle and aggressively double team off the top

18
Q

Boxes-Elbows-Nail

A

Defensive help positioning to ensure that off ball defenders are in position to help a beaten teammate from the top, wing, or corner

19
Q

Chase and Continue

A

After initial flare screen, defender will lock into offensive player body, chase over the top, and force offensive player to continue same direction

20
Q

Closeout

A

When rotating to player with ball, closeouts need to be quick, under control, and high side to prevent middle penetration

21
Q

Contact Show

A

Technique in guarding a screener where the defender shows body by jumping in the intended path of ball handler or cutter. Jump back just in time to give room for teammate to get over screen, and duck back without breaking contact with the screener

22
Q

Contain

A

Staying in front of the dribbler, getting ball-handler under control

23
Q

Contain P&R = WALL

A

Middle or Elbow P&R coverage where big stays in line with the ball and walls off penetration and recovers to own player. On-ball defender goes over/under depending on game plan

24
Q

Contest

A

No easy passes or shots. Hands up. Always challenging.

25
Q

Control the Ball

A

1 priority on defensive end of the court is to control the ball. Do not want offense to gain advantage with ball, especially middle penetration

26
Q

Cross Matchups

A

When we are being guarded by a player who we are not guarind on defense. Stay with whoever is guarding you until there is a safe chance to switch back

27
Q

Cutters

A

A critical aspect of defense is to see, hit, and deny cutters. If we are not alert and prepared for cutters, our defense will suffer

28
Q

Defelections

A

A barometer of active defense, getting a hand on a pass or dribble to create a potential turnover

29
Q

DHO

A

Dribble Hand Off

30
Q

Dive

A

A cut from outside to the paint, usually from the weakside

31
Q

Drive Screens

A

Put chest on the screener to force the screen to be set further up and away from basket

32
Q

Elbow

A

Where the FT line intersects lane lines on both sides. One of the most dangerous places on the floor, so deny elbow catch whenever possible

33
Q

Face (Full court defense)

A

Full court defense where X1 and X5 aggressively deny a direct inbounds pass to 1. X5 face guards 1 with X1 behind and not getting beat long

34
Q

Face 3/4 defense - in the post

A

Defender should get between 3/4 and fronting while facing their player to prevent inside pass

35
Q

Flare

A

When player at top of the key receives a back pick and cuts away from the ball to receive a pass on weakside

36
Q

Flat Switch

A

When a defender switches off a screen in a contain position. Usually occurs in the middle of floor

37
Q

Front

A

Post positioning where defender stays between passer and their player on block, denying post entry

38
Q

Front Rotate

A

When pass is made to a flash at the top when low post is fronted, the defender in front sprints to play flash player and low post player

39
Q

Full Rotation

A

When we double post and are in a full rotation situation, we are usually looking for the big to step out on the swing pass as the ball changes sides of the floor. Player who doubled stays and covers box to box and works to front post.

40
Q

Get legal

A

Regardless of defensive job, must be legal when you position yourself

41
Q

Go

A

A double team on the ball

42
Q

Go From Roamer

A

When the defender who doubles is designated as the “GO” player, or the player who is guarding a certain offensive player
