Defenitions Flashcards
Relative atomic mass
The weighted mean mass of one atom of an element compared to 1/12th of the mass of an atom of carbon-12
Relative molecular mass
The weighted mean mass of one molecule compared to 1/12th of the mass of an atom of carbon-12
Relative isotopic mass
The mass of one atom of an isotope compared to 1/12th of the mass of an atom of carbon-12
Acid
A H+ / proton donor
Strong acid
A H+ donor that dissociates completely
Weak acid
A H+ ion donor which dissociates partially
Salt
The product of a reaction in which the H+ ions of the acid are replaced by metal ions (or ammonium ions)
Avogadro’s number
6.02 x 10^23 (mol-1)
Isotope
Atoms of the same element with the same number of protons and electrons but a different number of neutrons (same atomic number, different atomic mass)
Concentration
Measure of how many particles (moles) there are of a substance in a particular volume of an aqueous solution
Concentration
Measure of how many particles (moles) there are of a substance in a particular volume of an aqueous solution
Standard solution
Solution of known concentration
Ionic bond
The electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
Covalent bond
The strong electrostatic attraction between a shared pair of electrons and the nuclei of 2 bonded atoms
Oxidation numbers
A + or - number which tell us the number of electrons an element has donated or accepted in a chemical reaction
Mole
The number of carbon atoms in 12g or c-12. One mole contains exactly 6.002 x 10^23 elementary entities
Molar mass
The mass of one mole of a substance in unity gmol^-1
