Repression
Unconscious forgetting of painful memories and impulses
Regression
Returning in functioning to a previous maturational standpoint
Denial
Refusal to consciously acknowledge events or truths that are obvious
Projection
Attribution of one’s own unacceptable ideas or impulses to another person
Projective Identification
Being changed by projection of a thought, belief, or emotion by someone else
Reaction formation
External expression of attitudes and behaviours which are the opposite of unacceptable internal impulses
Displacement
Transfer of emotional response toward a particular person, event, situation to another where it does not belong but carries less emotional risk
Rationalisation
Justification of behaviour or feelings with a plausible explanation after the event
Sublimation
External expression of unacceptable internal impulses in a socially acceptable way

Intellectualisation
Intellectualization is a transition to reason, where the person avoids uncomfortable emotions by focusing on facts and logic. The situation is treated as an interesting problem that engages the person on a rational basis, whilst the emotional aspects are completely ignored as being irrelevant.
