what was the campaign to suppress counter revolutionaries? (march 1950)
it aimed to prevent nationalist sympathisers from undermining the regime, most notably previous members of the nationalist party
how did the Korean war change the nature of terror?
it provided Mao with the justification to intensify the terror and purging as counter revolutionaries were expanded to anyone who was seen as undesireable to the CCP
what was self registration and why was it so effective?
those who had worked with the nationalists were asked to register to start a new political life by listing people they knew who supported the nationalists - all of those who confessed were arrested
what was mass participation?
ordinary Chinese were encouraged to denounce counter revolutionaries and subject them to struggle meetings.

what was the three antis campaign?
this was a campaign to purge corrupt members of the civil service and once new, loyal members had been trained the old ones were imprisoned and executed
what was the five antis campaign?
it mainly targeted the middle class and businessmen to seize control over economic assets

mass participation allowed local businessmen to be purged easier - 99% of businessmen in Shanghai were guilty of at least one anti

what was the 100 flowers campaign and what did it lead to? (feb 1957)
it was a call from Mao for open criticism of the party from intelectuals, leading to the anti-rightist campaign once Mao saw it had gone too far
what was the anti rightist campaign?
it was a campaign which targetted intelectuals - the definition was kept broad so the party could purge whoever they deemed undesireable
