Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism Flashcards
1
Q
How does thromboembolism come about? (Pathogenesis)
A
When self-regulatory mechanisms are intact, the fibrin clot is limited to the vessel injury zone.
Disruptions in the system can result in hypercoagulability and thrombotic complications.
Inability of fibrinolytic system to degrade fibrin mesh can also occur (Plasmin)
2
Q
What is the Virchow’s triad?
A
- Blood (Hypercoagulability)
- Vessel (Vascular damage)
- Flow (Circulatory stasis)
