What are a few drugs in the decongestant class?
Phenylephrine, Ephedrine, Naphazoline, & Pseudoephedrine
What is the expected pharmacological action of the decongestant class?
Decongestant stimulate alpha-adrenergic receptors which causes a reduction in the inflammation of the nasal membranes
What is the therapeutic use of a decongestant ?
Used to treat allergic or nonallergic rhinitis, sinusitis and the common cold
What are adverse effects or complications of a decongestant ?
Rebound congestion, agitation, nervousness, uneasiness, CNS stimulation is rare
What are some precautions or contraindications for a decongestant ?
Vasoconstriction, so for clients who have HTN, CV disease, dysrhythmias & CAD-avoid the use of decongestants. Also in closed-angle glaucoma
- Tips for nursing administration for decongestants can you name a few?
When administering nasal drops, the client must be in the lateral head -low position (to increase the effect and to prevent swallowing the Rx), use a topical decongestant for no longer than 3–5 days.
Which type of decongestant works faster? Topical or oral?
Topical
Which type of decongestant is preferred for children and why?
Drops because they can be administered precisely and toxicity can be prevented
Is Vasoconstriction more common in topic decongestants or oral decongestant ?
Oral
