Decon BDS5 Flashcards

1
Q

What are the stages of the decontamination cycle?

A
  1. Acquisition - practices should have a documented policy for the purchase of any medical devices
  2. Cleaning - Automated cleaning is preferred to manual cleaning
  3. Disinfection - Reduce number of viable microorganisms
  4. Inspection - All instruments carefully examined for organic material and/or damage under magnification
  5. Packaging - Where products are to be packaged, the materials should be. Compliant with the relevant European Standards (BS EN 868)
  6. Sterilisation - The following should be taken into account; process used, type of cycle and relevant cycle parameters
  7. Transport
  8. Storage - Areas designated for storage should be clean, dry, well ventilated and secure. Stock rotation should be used FIFO.
  9. Use

User;
Defined as the person designated by the practice owner/manager who is responsible for the decon equipment
Can certify equipment is fit for use
Holds all documentation
Ensures periodic testing and maintenance takes place
Can appoint operators
Can establish procedures

Manager;
Defined as the owner, employer, dental practitioner or practice manger who is ultimately acountable for operation of the dental premises
Ensures decon is carried out in compliance with the policies of the UK health departments and law
Ensures staff are trained

Q

What are the key elements of the cleaning cycle?

A

Time

Temperature;
The temp of the initial wash is usually below 40 degrees to avoid coagulation and fixing of body tissues to instruments

Chemicals;
Acidic detergents
Neutral pH detergents
Alkaline detergents pH 10
High alkaline detergents >pH10
Enzymatic detergents

Energy;
