Emer de Vattel. Armitage says “independence [was] fundamental to his definition of statehood,” which influenced the drafting committee’s emphasis on independence in order to convince the international community of their statehood.

John Adams believed July 2, 1776 “will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America.” Why?
A
On July 2 the Lee Resolution was passed by the first Continental Congress. It had three clauses, to be addressed by three committees :
- It “dissolved” all connection to GB and “resolved” that the colonies “are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states.” (the Declaration)
- It stated the intention to form “foreign Alliances” (the Model Treaty)
- It stated the intention for a “plan of confederation” between the colonies to be sent “for their consideration” (Articles of Confederation)
