Q

What are some things to look for when inspectign a deck

A

examine all sides bx standards say the weight needs to be evenly distributed
posts should sit on concrete footers that are poured below the frost line
posts should be attached to the footers not just resting on them
size of posts: 6” X6” can handle up to decks 12’ high. 4”X4” can handle smaller decks
anything structural within 18” of the ground needs to made of treated wood or something that doesnt rot and can handle moisture
the ledger board needs to be able to support 50% of the deck weight so it should be attached to the rim joist of the house by lag or through bolts
