What are cristae?
folds in the inner membrane of the mitochondria. site of oxidative phosphorylation
What is the rough endoplasmic Reticulum?
A system of membranes with ribosomes on its outer surface. the rough endoplasmic reticulum transports and synthesises proteins and glycoproteins
What is the function of the mitochondria?
site of aerobic respiration + produces ATP
What is a nuclear envelope?
A double membrane surrounding the nucleus that controls the entry + exit of materials
What is the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
A system of membranes with no ribosomes on its outer surface which TRANSPORTS + SYNTHESISES + STORES carbohydrates lipids
What are 4 functions of the Golgi Apparatus?
1.Produces secretory enzymes + carbohydrates
2.Stores and modifies proteins + trigylcerides
3.Forms vesicles for transporting proteins/triglycerides
4.Forms Lyosomes
Organelles found in plant cells (not animal cells) :
-Cellulose cell wall
-Vacuole
-Chloroplasts
Algal cells:
-Can be both multi/unicellular
-Variations in chloroplast sizes
Fungal cells:
-multi/unicellular
-cell walls made of chitin
Cell surface membranes
-made of Lipids + proteins
-Regulates movement in + out of the cell
Nucleus
-A large organelle surrounded by a nuclear envelope
-Controls cell activities by controlling transcription DNA
-Nucleolus produces ribosomes
Mitochondria
-Oval shaped, double membrane
-inner membrane is folded to form strucures called Cristae
-site of aerobic respiration
-Aerobic respiration produces ATP
Chloroplasts
-Small flattened, surrounded by a doublle membrane + thylakoid membranes
-stacked up thylakoid membranes
= grana
-where photosynthesis happens
Golgi Appparatus
A group of fluid filled membranes -bound flattened sacs + vesicles (often seen at the edge)
procceses and packages new lipids + proteins + Lyosomes
Golgi Vesicle
-A small fluid filled sacs in the cytoplasm surrounded by a membrane + produced Golgi A
