What does network mean?
A connection of two or more devices so they can share data or recourses.
What Is a LAN?
Local area network (a network covering a small area).
What is a WLAN?
Wireless local area network (a LAN which is wireless).
What is a WAN?
A wide area network. A network covering a large area.
What is a client-server network?
A network with at least one server to provide services to client computers.
What is a peer to peer network?
A network with no central server, each computer can act as a server.
What is a network topology?
Describes how the devices on the network are connected.
What is the internet?
A worldwide system of interconnected networks that enable information to be shared.
What is communication media?
The means by which data is transmitted between devices on a network.
What is protocol?
A set of rules that govern how communications on a network should be formatted and what they should include.
What does eavesdrop?
Having unauthorised sight of data being sent from one computer to another over a network.
Bandwidth.
Amount of data per unit of time.
Checksum.
Error detection, formula applied to data and answer is transmitted with data and checked on the other end.
Packet.
A small quantity of data.

An attack on a network attempting to prevent legitimate users from accessing it.

Determines which users can access which data and what they are allowed to do it with.

The act of gaining unauthorised access to a computer system and the data it contains.

Controlling access to a critical part of it by physical means.

Any kind of malicious attack on a network connected device.
Social engineering.
Any kind of attack on a computer system or network that exploits how people behave and respond to certain situations.
Phishing.
Attempting to gain confidential information by a message that appears to be from a trustworthy source.
Shoulder surfing.
Looking over there shoulder.
Unpatched software.
Software without the latest updates making it vulnerable.
Code vulnerability.
A computer program that has created a security issue that may be taken advantage of to gain access to a computer system or data within it.
Modular testing.
Testing each block of code as it is completed to ensure the code works as expected.
Audit trail.
A record of activities that have taken place on a computer system, this record is randomly generated and says who did what.
internet service provider (ISP).
An organisation that provides its customers with a connection to the internet.
Router.
A piece of networking hardware used to forward packets of data from one network to another.
Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML).
Details of how the text should be formatted, hyperlinks, details of any objects such as pictures or videos.
