Deck 5 Flashcards
A period
A period is a horizontal row of elements in the Periodic Table. Elements show trends properties across a period.
A group
A group is a vertical column in the Period Table. Elements in a group have similar chemical properties and their atoms have the same number of outer-shell electrons.
Periodicity
Periodicity is a regular periodic variation of properties of elements with atomic number and position in the Periodic Table.
Thermal decomposition
Thermal decomposition is the breaking up of a chemical substance with heat into at least two chemical substances.
Isotopes
Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons.
Atomic(proton) number
Atomic(proton) number is the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
Mass(nucleon) number
Mass(nucleon) number is the number of particles (protons and neutrons) in the nucleus.
An ion
An ion is a positively or negatively charged atom or
covalently bonded ) group of atoms ( a molecular ion
What is a displacement reaction?
A displacement reaction is a reaction in which a more-reactive element displaces a less-reactive element from an aqueous solution of the latters ions.
Disproportionation
Disproportionation is the oxidation and reduction of the same element in a redox reaction.
A precipitation reaction
A precipitation reaction is the formation of a solid from a solution during a chemical reaction. Precipitates are often formed when two aqueous solutions are mixed together.
Precipitate
A solid that comes out of solution.
Spectator ion
An ion that remains unchanged on both sides of the reaction.
Ionic equation
An ionic equation is a formula that only displays the electrolytes involved in a particular chemical reaction.
