Deck 31- Drainage basins processes Flashcards
What does precipitation mean?
The movement of water in any form from the atmosphere to the ground.
What does evaporation mean?
The change in state of water from a liquid to a gas.
What does condensation mean?
The change from a gas to a liquid, such as when water vapour changes into water droplets.
What does transpiration mean?
The process where plants lose water through the stomata pore in their leaves.
What is evapotranspiration?
The combined effect of evaporation and transpiration.
What is a surface store?
Where water is held on the Earth’s surface.
What is surface runoff?
The movement of water that is unconfined by a channel across the surface of the ground. Also known as overland flow.
What is infiltration?
The movement of water from the ground surface into the soil.
What is soil moisture storage?
Where water is stored in the soil layer i.e. in the pore spaces between the soil particles.
What is throughflow?
Water moving sideways through the soil, downslope under the influence of gravity.
What is percolation?
The transfer of water from the surface or from the soil into the bedrock beneath.
What is groundwater storage?
Where water is stored in a permeable layer of bedrock.
What is groundwater flow?
The movement of water underneath the grounds surface in the bedrock layer.
What is channel flow?
The movement of water within a river channel. This is also a store of water within the channel.
What is interception?
The process of water being caught and stored above the grounds surface (vegetation).
