Partitive article: some, any
some butter
some meat

some letters
du (masc.), de la (fem), de l’ (m & f) des (plural)

Partitive when adjective comes before plural noun
I received some lovely presents.
This region has some very pretty villages.
des –> de + beau, bon, petit, joli+ noun
J’ai reçu de beaux cadeaux.

Omission of indefinite article.

- Before predicate nominative of nationality, occupation. Except if qualified by adjective.
Il est advocat. Il est un bon advocat. - With quel (exclamatory): Quelle journée!
- With cent & mille. Il a cent livres.
Six special uses of definite article in contrast to English.
- Before abstract & general nouns.
Nous voulons la liberté. - Before name of language, except after parler or en.
Écrivez en français. Elle étude le français. - Before titles of rank or profession and qualified proper names:
Le général Foch est mort. Le petit Jean est content. - Before parts of the body.
Elle a les cheveux noirs. - Before names of countries.
- With units of measurement indicating price.
