Deck 3 Flashcards

Q

What are the steps of creating a conceptual framework?

A
  1. Select key construct(s) in your research question
  2. Look at the literature that covers your problem using those constructs (and synonyms) ->
    • you should have a search strategy (which databases, which search terms (synonyms, different spellings?), which restrictions (only peer-reviewed journals?)
  3. Identify definitions of the key constructs (and links between key constructs)
  4. Use/adapt those definitions (and links) that make sense for your research

Q

What are the requirements for SRQs?

A

SRQs are taxonomic…they (are supposed to)

●Stay in bounds (they don’t expand the GRQ)
●Reasonably cover the domain of the GRQ (no unnecessary restrictions)
●Are mutually exclusive (no overlap between them)

Q

What is a path diagram?

A

A path diagram: graphic representation of direct
and indirect relationships of concepts, e.g., X→Y. These diagrams can include direction of the relationship/ positive or negative relationships

Q

What is a tree diagram?

A

A tree diagram systematically breaks down a concept (situation, phenomenon, …) into aspects, and then maps these out in increasing details, at successive level/branchings

A tree diagram is like a taxonomy
It should be exhaustive and exclusive
It subdivides a construct in aspects or elements.
This can be done in different ways! There is not one good way rendering all others bad.

Q

What is a facet diagram?

A
Facet design decomposes using a declared logic
of classification (facets), each with a number of
categories.Facets allow us to get a grip on how we decompose constructs by forcing us to directly declare the logic of each branching.

Facets are typically combined in a nested way, so with three facets with three categories each, you decompose your construct into 3x3=9 indicators

Q

What are the common mistakes in research questions?

A

Overly ambitious

●Questions are too broad/varied/numerous
●Questions involve the complete regulative cycle
●Questions are not answerable with evidence

SRQs have poor fit with GRQ

●Specific questions expand, reduce or are unrelated to the general question
●The logic of decomposition is unclear or illogical
