Deck 2: AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM DRUGS Flashcards
What is Autonomic Nervous System?
A neuropathic system component that governs pulse rate, cardiac output, breathing, metabolism, and sexual desire. It has sympathetic, parasympathetic, and gastrointestinal divisions.
Sympathetic/Adrenergic
The “fight-or-flight” reaction
Parasymphathetic/Cholinergic
Nerves that calm the body after It slows breathing, pulse rate, and metabolism.
Afferent
Stimulation of the central nervous system
Efferent
Affects the cells of effector organs by picking up impulses and sending them via the spinal cord to those organs.
Norepinephrine
Sympathetic NS
Acetylcholine
Parasympathetic NS
Agonist
Medications that cause a reaction in the body.
Antagonist
Medicines that prevent a reaction from occurring.
Stimulates the SNS
SYMPATHOMIMETIC
Inhibit the SNS
SYMPATHOLYTIC
Stimulate the PNS
PARASYMPATHOMIMETIC
Inhibit the PNS
PARASYMPATHOLYTIC
Adrenergic Agonists
Contribute to the activation of the “fight or flight” response.
Selective and Non-Selective
Selective - Affects one particular class of receptors
Non-Selective - Affects all receptors
