Deck 2 Flashcards
What is an element?
A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by ordinary mean
What is a compound?
A substance that is formed when 2 or more elements combine chemically to make a new substance
What is a mixture?
2 or more substances combine but do not chemically combine to form a different substance.
If a new element were discovered and named newmaterialium, would you expect it to be a metal or a nonmetal?
A metal (ium=metal)
Is salt an element, a compound or a mixture?
A compound
Is a soft drink an element, a compound, or a mixture?
A mixture
What is another name of an element?
An atom
What is another name of a compound?
Molecules
Do compounds behave the same way as the atoms that they are made from?
No because they have different atoms which have different properties
The symbol for carbon dioxide is CO2. What atoms combine to form this molecule?
1 carbon and 2 oxygen- look for subscripts to tell how many atoms there are
The air consists of nitrogen and oxygen molecules. Is air a compound? Why or why not?
No because there are oxygen and nitrogen mixed in the air but not by any chemical reaction- kept original properties.
What is a mineral?
Compounds that make up the earth’s crust.
What is a native mineral?
Minerals that are comprised of just a single element.
Types of minerals
Silicates, halides, and oxides
What 2 kinds of atoms combine to form water?
Hydrogen and oxygen
Why is water called a universal solvent?
Because it dissolves almost anything it touches
What is unique about the water molecule that makes it able to dissolve so may substances?
The 105 degree angle causes positive or negative charge to distribute unevenly.
What would happen to your body if oxygen could not be dissolved in water?
Your organs wouldn’t have oxygen
Is water truly a universal solvent?
No because it cannot dissolve oil or fat
Why is it important for mothers with nursing babies to drink lots of water?
Because water is needed to make milk
What are two differences between a compound and a mixture?
- mixtures don’t make new substances while compounds create new substances.
- Mixtures keep their own properties while compounds don’t
What is a homogeneous mixture?
A mixture when the substances are distributed evenly
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
A mixture when the substances are distributed unevenly
Name 3 common mixtures
Air, milk, orange juice, granite
