DECK 1: (P1) IV & DV Flashcards
What is Psychology?
Psychology is the systematic study of behaviour & mental processes
Define Systematic Study
To research it methodically
Describe behaviours and the different types.
Some behaviours include actions & responses. E.G. Eating, Sleeping Talking. The two different types are Overt & Covert.
What is Overt Behaviour?
Observable & Visible. E.G. Dancing & Singing
What is Covert Behaviour?
Behaviour that is hidden from others. E.G Thinking & trying to remember what you got for your birthday.
Describe mental processes
Perception, Cognition & Emotion.
Perception: Organising sensation into something more meaningful.
Cognition: thinking
Emotion: Physiological Experience (A feeling)
What is the difference between Psychology & Psychiatry?
Psychologist: University degree, masters &/or doctorate in Psychology.
Psychiatry: PHD in Medicine & specialises in psychiatry.
Describe the role of a Psychologist.
Counselling or behaviour therapies. Cannot prescribe drugs or complete medical procedures. They do not have any legal authority to hospitalise someone.
Describe the role of a Psychiatrist.
Can prescribe drugs & perform medical procedures. Able to recommend and arrange admission to a hospital if required. Treatment methods may be physical, psychological or may be a combination.
TRUE OR FALSE:
A group of participants, the experimental group, is exposed to the IV.
TRUE
TRUE OR FALSE:
The experimental group is said to be in the experimental condition.
TRUE
What type of group is NOT exposed to the IV? What condition is this group said to be in?
The Control Group. The Control Condition
Provide an overall summary of Experimental & Control groups.
The control group provides a ‘baseline’ or standard against which the researcher can compare the performance of the experimental group in order to determine the effect of the IV on the DV.
What are the 3 Experimental Research Designs?
- Independent Groups
- Repeated Measures
- Matched Participants
Describe a variable.
Any factors that can change (“vary”) in amount or type over time.
