What is the outer layer of the hair called?
Cuticle
Which part of the hair structure contains the temporary bonds that are effected by setting and blow drying?
Cortex
What are the bonds called that are changed during setting and blow drying?
Hydrogen and salt bonds
The change that happens to the hydrogen bonds is permanent. Is this true or false?
False. They are only broken down by moisture and gradually reset as the hair dries.
When would you use ‘on base’ setting method?
When wanting to create volume.
When would you use back combing?
To give structure and/or volume.
When would you use back brushing?
To create bulk. Mainly used when putting hair up.
What does hygroscopic mean?
Ability to absorb moisture.
What is the purpose of a styling product?
It puts a barrier on the hair shaft, preventing the hair from absorbing moisture which will then make the style last longer. It can also make the hair easier to control.
What is the purpose of a finishing product?
To help keep the style in. It also adds another barrier to the hair.
What is hair in its natural state called?
Alpha Keratin
When is hair in its natural state; wet or dry?
When wet
What is hair in its newly formed state called?
Beta Keratin
What is cohesive setting?
When setting the hair from wet to dry
Give an example of dry setting.
Tongs, wand, heated rollers. Any method where the hair is already dry.
