Ancient/old regime
Made up of three social classes
1st estate- made from Roman Catholic clergy
1% of the population
2nd estate- nobility
2% of the population
3rd estate- common people
97% of the population
3 sub groups of the 3rd estate
- brougeoisia - merchants, doctors, lawyers
- Artisans - skilled in trade- live in city’s
- Peasant farmers - common laborers

Third estate demanded:

King orders troops to put down the protest
-people attacked the prison
-the prison was a symbol of royal power
