Q

Debussy — Prélude à l’après midi d’un faun

tonality

In the transition between the first section (based on the opening flute melody) and the second section (more pentatonic/diatonic) the music is mostly derived from a particular exotic scale (very characerisic of Debussy) which makes any sense of key impossible…

what scale is this?

A

Whole-tone scale

Is any of the harmony functional or diatonic?

A

sometimes

There are anumber of places where there are clear perfect cadences.

much of the melodic writing (especially in the middle section) is diatonic - it’s just that the key/scale doesn’t stay fixed for very long

rhythm and meter

if we say that the form/structure is a modified ABA’ then the rhythmic/metric feel in A is quite different from that in B

explain

A

A-sections are rhythmically and metrically vague - little sense of downbeat. Mainly compound time, frequent changes of meter, rhythmically complex melodies

B-section is mainly in 3/4, more defined downbeats, less complex melodies (semiquaver based), but more syncopated against the more regular meter.

Q

Debussy — Prélude à l’après midi d’un faun

Debussy doesn’t use (score for) his orchestra in a typical Romantic way - what’s the main difference?

A

He favours woodwind instruments over the more usual strings (who mostly provide accompaniment)

first violins in particular are silent for much of the opening section
