Debbie FINAL Flashcards
Read and Write Software are good for?
clients with learning disabilities and developmental disabilities
What is a DRAGON
a computer speech recognition program that allows people to talk to their computer and have their speech turn into text
what is Kurzweil 3000? who is it often used by?
scanning, reading and studying tool often used by people who have learning disabilities
Name some Assistive Technology for Communication
communication books or boards talking photo albums levelled communicators: step by step single message devices talking pockets, buttons tech/ speak go talk, cheap talk
What are examples of assistive tech
low mid high
what is a low tech assistive tech ? provide an example
Low Tech AT are devices or equipment that DO NOT REQUIRE MUCH TRAINING, LESS EXPENSIVE AND IS NOT COMPLEX
ex: magnifiers large print text canes/ walkers pencil grips paper and pen to communicate
what is a mid tech assistive tech ? provide an example
Mid Tec AT devices or equipment that range in the MIDDLE of the continuum that may have SOME complex features, ELECTRIC OR BATTERY, SOME TRAINING, MORE EXPENSIVE THAN low tech devices.
ex: talking spell checkers manual wheelchair captions for televisions books on CD's alternate mouse or keyboard
what is a hightech assistive tech ? provide an example
High Tec AT refers to the MOST COMPLEX, DIGITAL or ELECTRONIC, COMPUTERIZED, most likely require TRAINING, COST the MOST.
Ex: power wheelchairs digital hearing aids bluetooth hands-free devices voice activated phones
why does INFORMATION TECH EXIST ? (IT)
FSEE
functioning
skills
the environment
expereinces
Why does TECHNOLOGY AND PHYSIOLOGICAL FUNCTIONING EXIST?
Manage HEALTH PROBLEMS
Controls ones’s BODY
Improve MUSCLE TONE
Promote HEARING
How does IT help with skill enhancement ?
HINT : 3 monkey signs and move
move better ex: wheel chair
speak better ex: communication systems
hear better ex: hearing aids computerized eye glasses
see better ex: magnifiers, reading scanners
How can IT help with the control of the environment ?
environmental control units: increases safety, control lights, electrical doors, appliances, detect intruders
smart homes: remote controlled doors/ windows and motion lighting
navigation: to help people find their way around - with hearing and visual options
interactive computer programs: touch screen
what is tongue technologies ?
This is a new technology where it allows people with severe disabilities to control their environments with their tongue. Movements of the tongue can then be translated into manipulation of a computer mouse, control of a wheelchair, and other interactions with the surrounding environment.
*mall magnet implanted in the tongue
how can assistive technology expand experiences?
increase socialization
write better - computers that respond to speech
create better - outlet for creative expression
learn and remember - text, video and audio cues
recreate better - assistive equipment
Why do people use IT for adaption/ accommodation ?
limited knowledge and awareness of assistive technology
misconceptions - persons with disabilities cannot function properly in society, cannot be productive
raise awareness of how assistive technology can include PWD
what is “ THE HUMMER” ?
the hummer converts vocal cord vibrations into a digital signal. The message is then fed to a computer tray deciphers the noise as if it were to click of a mouse ,allowing users to type works and complete sentences.
where was “ the hummer” developed? and who for?
Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation hospital
to help youth who have complex disabilities but can still “hum”
