Q

weaknesses of debates

A
  • they are confrontational and focus on point scoring with not enough time to fully explore issues
  • once a minister has stated a position in a debate they are unlikely to change in fear of being accused of doing a u-turn eg; Liz Truss has sacked her chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, and announced a reversal of their promise to freeze corporation tax.
  • the government dominates the parliamentary timetable and can put their own needs on top of opposition needs giving them less time.
  • guillotine motion.
