Death of a Salesman Flashcards
An air of the dream clings to the place,
A dream rising out of reality.
We are aware of towering, angular shapes behind it, surrounding it on all sides.
Only the blue light of the sky falls upon the house and forestage; the surrounding area shows an angry glow of orange
Dad left when I was such a baby and I never had a chance to talk to him
And I still feel — kind of temporary about myself.
That’s the wonder, the wonder of this country,
That a man can end with diamonds here on the basis of being liked!
I see it like a diamond, shining in the dark,
Hard and rough, that I can pick up and touch in my hand.
LINDA: He was so wonderful with his hands.
BIFF: He had the wrong dreams. All, all, wrong.
Will you let me go, for Christ’s sake?
Will you take that phony dream and burn it before something happens?
The woods are burning!
I can’t drive a car!
The woods are burning, boys, you understand?
There’s a big blaze going on all around. I was fired today.
Biff, I swear to God!
Biff, his life is in your hands!
You can’t eat the orange and throw the peel away —
A man is not a piece of fruit!
She has developed an iron repression of her exceptions to Willy’s behavior — she more than loves him, she admires him…his massive dreams and little cruelties, served her
only as sharp reminders of the turbulent longings within him, longings which she shares but lacks the temperament to utter and follow to their end.
And be sweet to him tonight, dear. Be loving to him.
Because he’s only a little boat looking for a harbor.
You’re my foundation
and my support, Linda
Work a lifetime to pay off a house. You finally own it, and there’s nobody to live in it.
Well, dear, life is a casting off. It’s always that way.
