Death and afterlife Flashcards
What must you know about death and the afterlife
Heaven, hell, purgatory
Election
Sheep and the goats
What do Christians see heaven as
A place which is righteous and a place where there is no hunger or pain. There are different views
Protestants see it as an everlasting place
Catholics see it as a eternal place
What do Christians see hell as
A place of suffering and eternal suffering
‘Rich man and Lazarus’
Hell is required for us to follow moral laws, if there was no hell, people would be more open to breaking laws
Hell as a symbolic state
It would be odd for a God to have a place of eternal punishment, so its believed that its just a representation to stop people from doing evil
Hell as a spiritual state
Hell is seen as a spiritual state, and not a place which is under the earth
Issues with hell and the nature of God
God is seen as all loving and merciful, it would be odd to think that God would allow things like eternal punishment, surely temporary punishment would be enough
What are some confusions regarding identity afterlife
How old a person will be, will they have disabilities? is it our physical body or another thing entirely?
Some issues with afterlife in the bible
Very little information regarding the afterlife, but it argues that there is something after death
There are issues of believability, what other proof do we have of an afterlife existing?
How much must one sin to get into hell? is it a set amount? how is it measured?
What is purgatory
A place where one goes to ‘purge’ from sin before entering heaven. Catholics believe this but protestants do not.
'’some sins can be forgiven in an age to come’’
John Hick views purgatory as more ‘God-like’ as he allows us to rid of our sins.
What are the 3 types of elections
Limited
Unlimited
Universal
What is limited election
Only a small amount can be saved
Augustine argued that only a small amount were ‘invited into heaven’, that of which were chosen by God himself. Calvinists believe in this viewpoint that God selects those who will go to hell.
What is Unlimited election
That everyone is called to be saved, but a few will actually be saved
Created by Karl Barth who argued that Jesus judges everyone
What is Universalism
That everyone will be saved regardless of beliefs.
John Hick argues that purgatory will help with completing the soul making process, and that everyone will be saved.
This creates an idea that nothing matters as you will be saved regardless
When will we be judged
On the day of judgment where Jesus comes down and judges everybody.
What is unfair about Gods judgment
God knows if we will go to heaven and hell before we’re even born, this questions if we actually have free will, it also questions if God just allows us to make mistakes.
