Death And Afterlife Flashcards
What does the Catholic Church teach about when Christians are judged and where they go
Judged at moment of death
Go to heaven purgatory or hell
What does Calvin believe happens after death
The dead are conscious while they wait either in agony or bliss as they await judgement day
Anglicans and Methodists agree
Souls wait to be reunited with the body at the end of time
Points supporting a physical resurrection
Jesus’ body gone from tomb
Doubting Thomas allowed to physically feel Jesus
Points against everyone having a physical resurrection
Jesus kept his wounds so would people who lost their heads also lose their head in afterlife ???
Even if God “renews” you , then you aren’t the same body
St Paul’s tent arguement
This life we are given a tent (unstable)
Next life we have eternal house (stable structure
John Hicks view in election and it’s critics
Everyone will reach God in the end as a loving God would not only acccept Christians
This is a universalist view
However you could argue that this undermines Jesus’s death of the cross (argued by Pope Benedict)
Also what is the point of going to church if everyone is accepted
Karl Barth’s idea on election
Unlimited election
Jesus bought salvation for all
Everyone has chance of salvation - God chooses
Calvin’s idea on election
Limited election
God knows everything about everyone and know choice they make can surprise him
He already knows who will be punished and saved
