Q

what is cognitive preparation?

A

-in this initial stage, offenders will spend time understanding what makes them angry and identifying triggers that are liable to make them react with anger
-This means talking to an anger management therapist to remember experiences of anger and what led to that feeling. This is a very individualised part of the training as the cues for anger vary from person to person and it is vital to know what situation will make the angry feeling escalate.

Q

What is the stage of skill accusation?

A

-There are skills that can be taught such as relaxation techniques and
assertiveness techniques. Social skills training is invaluable as anger can stem from frustration at being unable to communicate in a social situation.
-It is individualised in line with the offenders’ needs, which are identified from the first stage.

Q

what is application training designed to do and what can this be done through?

A

-final stage is designed to provide an opportunity for the offenders to practise their newly acquired skills.
-can be done through using role-play in both realistic and imaginary situations. The idea is that offenders are prepared in the future for situations that might have been an issue for them in the past. Using the new skills they have learned, the situation should no longer lead to criminal acts. They should be able to respond in a non-aggressive way.
