CBT
what are the 3 stages of anger management
cognitive preparation
skill acquisition
application practice
what occurs during the cognitive preparation stage
offenders reflect on their previous experiences and consider what makes them angry
having identified situations that act as triggers, the therapist helps the offender to recognise the current interpretation of the event is irrational
what happens in the skill acquisition stage
offenders are taught techniques and skills to help them deal with anger provoking situations rationally and effectively
cognitive techniques: positive self talk, counting to 10
behavioural techniques: assertiveness training, promoting individuals to communicate more effectively
physiological techniques: focus on the phsical reaction of anger (e.g: relaxation training or meditation to control emotion)
what happens in application practice
offedners are given the opportunity to practice their new skills within a carefully controlled environment
role play scenarios are utilised with offenders required to see the situations as real and therapists needing to have the skill to create a response in the offender who needs to respond accordingly
if the offender is able to deal with the scenario they receive positive reinforcement
