Deaing With Offending Behaviour: Anger Management Flashcards
What did Navaco suggest
That cognitive factors trigger the emotional arousal which generally precedes aggressive acts
Some people anger is quick to surface especially in situation that are perceived to be anxiety inducing or threatening
What is anger managment
Is used to reduce the likelihood of recidivism and violent behaviour and is offered to offenders in prion as a storm of CBT
WHat is the aim of anger management
Change the way offenders respons to situations that lea to anger and the psychological defects of anger on order to avoid violent outburst
What is the three stages of anger management
Cognitive preparation
Skills acquisition
Application practice
What does cognitive preparation involves
-talking with therapist to identify triggers for aggression and anger and to challenge whether these responses are appropriate or rational
What does skills acquisition involve
Introduced to skills and techniques to help deal with anger provoking situations more rationally and effectively
Techniques could be - cognitive ( positive self talk), behavioural (communicating more effectively), physiological ( relaxation training meditation)
What does application practice involve
Role play is used to try out the skills that have been developed during the therapy and to reflect on progress made and positive reinforcement if offender deals with role play successfully
positive outcome of anger managment with young offenders
Keen et al
Progress made with young offender aged between 17 and 21 who took part in anger managment programme
Offenders reported increased awareness of their anger managment difficulties abs increased capacity to exercise self control
Research support of anger managment to deal with offenders
Ireland found a 92% improvement in behaviour of offenders after they engaged with anger management compared to those that had not
Suggest it is an effective way of dealing with offenders and reducing aggressive behaviours
Limitation of anger managment as a way of dealing with offenders - generalisation
May not be suitable for all offenders
A lot of offenders do not commit violent crimes and there are plenty of aggressive crimes that do not include violent actions
So anger managment may only be useful for offender who have committed hostile aggressive crimes
Limitation of anger managment is there is conflicting research due to individual factors
Ireland provided support
Howells et al conducted investigation with Australian offenders
Found pots in a anger managment programme had little overall impact when compared to a control group who received o treatment
This was not true for all offenders who showed intense anger before programme
Offender open to ch age and highly motivated on onset gained similar gains
This suggests anger managment may only benefit offenders who fit a certain profile
Limitation - expensive
It’s an expensive option
