A
Infants are born with hearing
Deafness in childhood is relatively common and often goes unrecognised.
Normal hearing is essential for speech and language development
The first 2 yrs are critical for this development but most hearing problems detected over these 2 yrs
A mother who believes that her child may be deaf is rarely wrong in this suspicion.
Hearing aids required by 12 mths in deaf children.

Screening
A
The aim of screening should be to recognise every deaf child,
- before the vital time for learning speech is wasted.
Optimal screening times:
- 8–9 mths (or earlier)
- school entry
No child is too young for audiological assessment.
Informal office tests are inadequate to exclude hearing loss.
