What is Developmental coordination disorder?

neurobiological disorder related to specific abnormalities in brain function
What are some reasons DCD may occur?
difficulty interpreting sensory input
difficulty choosing motor action needed for specific situation
difficulty forming plan of action in correct sequence
difficulty modifying and monitoring a movement once it started
What are some risk factors for DCD?
low birth weight
preterm birth
significant comorbidity and ADHD, learning disorder, speech and language delay
What are some ASD risk factors?
family history
advance maternal age
maternal nutrition/drug/alcohol use
chemical or environmental pollutants
metabolic disorders
genetic conditions
What are the criteria for DCD diagnosis?
motor performance deficits
participation and ADL deficits
early onset
no exclusionary conditions
What is the criteria for diagnosing ASD?
persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts
restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities
symptoms must be present in early development period
