Rule of 7:
Total the number of cards between you and dummy in the suit about which you are worried, subtract that total from seven, and the answer is the number of times you should hold-up (not play) your single stopper.

For example, in hand 42, declarer held three spades, and dummy two spades. Take that total of five away from seven, and you are left with two. Therefore, declarer should hold-up two times.
