DC Motors Flashcards
What are the two types of DC motors?
Brushed and brushless
Two types of brushed DC motors?
Permanent Magnet , Field wound
Dc Motor with magnets as the stator, less the 5 HP , rotating member in armature , brushes carry current to copper bars called commutator.
Permanent magnet
Three types of field wound motors?
Series , shunt , Compound.
Dc Motor with field windings in series with armature, high HP , no speed control , used for traction drives , A leads / S leads
Series motor
Dc Motor with
• Windings parallel to Armature
• Helps control overspeeding
• A Leads / F leads
• Air compressors / Hydraulic Motors
• Less torque
Shunt Motor
Dc Motor with
• Both Shunt and Series winding
• Good torque, good speed control
• Elevators / cranes
• A Leads / S Leads / F Leads
Compound / stabilized shunt
Dc Motor with
• Magnets Mounted in
Rotor
• ALiKe to AC Motors
• UP to 20 HP
• Windings in Stator
Brushless motor
How do Dc Motors control speed?
Add or Removing resistance
Disadvantage of DC motors?
More costly , more maintenance
