What’s the Excited Generator?
Field winding or coil is energized by a separate DC source
The flux produced by the poles depends upon the field current with the unsaturated region of magnetic material of the poles. ( flux is directly proportional to the field current.)
Saturated region (the flux remains constant).

Self excited DC Generator?
Current to field winding is supplied by the Generator itself. Field coils should be connected in parallel, armature in series. They can be connected partly.
Shunt wound Generator?
The field winding is connected across armature winding forming a parallel or shunt circuit. ( full terminal voltage is applied across it )
Small field current is applied flows ( winding has many turns of fine wire) has high resistance of the order of 100 ohms .
