DC Circuits Flashcards
Generator
A device where a wire is passed through a magnetic field
Voltage is produced as long as there is motion between the conductor and the magnetic field
Symbol for DC generator
A circle with a G inside of it
Symbol for AC generator
A circle with the AC symbol in it
Thermocouple
A device that turns heat into electrical energy
Consists of two dissimilar wires wrapped together,
Usually it is copper and either zinc or iron. When heat is applied copper readily gives up its electrons which gives the copper a positive charge and the other wire a negative charge
Symbol for photovoltaic cell (solar cell)
a cell with circle around it with two arrows pointing towards it
Piezoelectric Effect
When pressure is applied to certain crystalline minerals like quartz, tourmaline, rochelle salts, or barium nitrate creating a current
How does the Piezoelectric Effect work
Cyrstals with no pressure have negative and positive charges randomly distributed throughout the mineral but when pressure is applied electrons will go to one side which will create the potential difference
Battery
2 or more cells
Primary cells
Cells that can not be recharged
Secondary cells
Cells that can be recharged
Lelanche Cell
Example of a PRIMARY cell. Also called a dry cell. HAs a p
